Yousaf Karsh`s uses dark clothing on a darkened back ground and define shadows more to give an effect.
Richard Avedon uses dark clothing on a white background which gives a cool effect.
I have used both of the photographers styles in my photography and have edited them in similar ways.

My Own Portraiture Photos:
Here are some of the photos that me and another group took when we went out of class and onto the field. There was also a few more pictures that haven't been included as the background had a few people in it. Even though they may have been good photos to use, they would be a lot harder for me to edit into the style of my chosen photographers. These photographs that I have chosen I feel are going to be a lot easier for me to edit as their faces are looking near enough towards the camera.
Edits;
Here is my first edited photo, I have compared it my original photo to show the difference photoshop can make. To start off with, I had to crop the photograph so there wasn't too much going on in the background of the picture. I then used a tool to darken around the outline of the main focus, this was to blacken the background. I then used a burning tool on photoshop and burnt around the edges to create more of a smoother effect,. To create this effect, I also used; shadow, mid tone and highlight effects to make the photograph more affective. I used shadows to darken the creases and I used highlight to make the white in the photograph stand out more and draw more attention.

Here I have edited my original photos into Pop Art, I have decided to this as I like Andy Warhol`s Pop Art creations. To create this pop art effect, to start this off, I had to add a brighter background. I did this by choosing a random but bright color and painted it onto the background by using the paint bucket tool. Once I had finished my background, I the used the eyedropper tool and used colors that were already in the photograph. For example, on the face, I wanted the skin color to still look natural and similar to how it normally is, by using the eyedropper tool, I was able todo this and I feel that it looks better having it more natural and not too over the top. Once I was happy with the results, I pressed onto; image, adjustments and posterize, this then gave the whole photo more of a pop art look and completed my edited photograph.
Here are some edits that I have practiced for my final piece;
Here are some edits that I have been playing around with on photoshop. I have used 2 simple photos and have combined them together. I think I may do this for my exam as it is effective and I enjoy editing them.
